History of the Department of Pediatrics №1 and Neonatology of KhNMU
Pediatrics, being a relatively young science, its formation has gone through a number of stages, each of that was determined by the socio-economic conditions of society and the level of development of science. The history of Kharkiv pediatrics is inseparable from the history of the development of higher medical education, which is associated with the opening of the Imperial University in Kharkiv in 1804.
Університет ХНМУ
The founder of the university was V. Karazin who associated with the opening of the university to improve medical care and the possibility of "either by multiplying physicians or by other actions to help save babies." This phrase indicates that progressive experts in the early 19th century saw the connection between the future of the country and children's health.

The teaching of pediatrics was started by Professor Ivan Petrovich Kamensky, who was the first to give a theoretical course of children's diseases at the Department of Midwifery.

From 1826 until the abolition of serfdom, the pediatric direction within the walls of Kharkiv University had no further development, despite the fact that in the world pediatrics began to separate as a branch of medicine.

In 1862 Professor I. Lazarevich was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Kharkiv University. He had a great influence on the development of both general and scientific pediatrics at the Kharkiv Higher Medical School. The further implementation of the ideas of Professor I. Lazarevich was facilitated by the activities of his student Mishael Ponomarev.

The founder
The founder of the university was V. Karazin who associated with the opening of the university to improve medical care and the possibility of "either by multiplying physicians or by other actions to help save babies." This phrase indicates that progressive experts in the early 19th century saw the connection between the future of the country and children's health.
Begining
The teaching of pediatrics was started by Professor Ivan Petrovich Kamensky, who was the first to give a theoretical course of children's diseases at the Department of Midwifery.

Mishael Ponomarev was born at the 15-th of November (2), 1845 in the Poltava province. Іn 1868 after graduation from the Medical Faculty of Kharkiv University, he was invited by I. Lazarevich to the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatrics. In 1873, after defending his dissertation "Origin of Blood Peritoneal Tumors", he went abroad at his own expense to study childhood diseases. In 1875, Professor I. Lazarevich by decision of the University Council was transferred the teaching of children's diseases to Associate Professor M. Ponomarev. 1875 was the moment when the teaching of pediatrics at Kharkiv University passed into the hands of a person with special pediatric training.

The department was opened by the Council of Professors of the University on January 10, 1892. The base of the department was an outpatient clinic, where a theoretical course of lectures was given. M. Ponamaryov published a monograph "Diseases of newborns." Further development of pediatrics in Kharkiv included the organization of the process of teaching students the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in children and the creation of material and technical base for teaching.
1902 year
In 1902, Ivan Troitsky, a pupil of the University of Kiev, was elected as a head of the Department of Pediatrics, who headed the department for the next 17 years. His activity has contributed to improving the quality of teaching pediatrics, the development of scientific research, as well as drawing public attention to the needs of children.
І. В. Троїцький був талановитим пропагандистом профілактичного спрямування в педіатрії. Велику увагу він приділяв питанням вигодовування дитини, режиму і дієті годуючої матері. Він описав значення соціально-побутових чинників в етіології рахіту.

I.Troitsky was a talented advocate of preventive medicine in pediatrics. He paid great attention to breastfeeding, diet and nutrition of nursing mothers. He described the importance of social factors in the etiology of ricket.

I. Troitsky was involved in solving the organization of students' education not only in the outpatient clinic, but also at the patient's bedside. He was the founder of the construction of the first children's university clinic; expansion of scientific research and creation of laboratories and diagnostic rooms. He is the author of 150 scientific works, including monographs "The Doctrine of Children's Diseases" (1908), "Childhood Hygiene" (1912), author of the first textbook in Ukraine "Lecture on Children's Diseases" (1887). Active position of prof. Troitsky contributed to improving the quality of pediatric teaching, paid public attention to the children needs. On his initiative, the first dairy kitchen "Drop of Milk" was opened, and the "Union for Combating Infant Mortality" was established in Kharkiv (1906); the First International Congress of Pediatricians was convened (1912); in December 1912 the Society of Pediatricians at the Imperial Kharkiv University was established. Prof. Troitsky thought that Pediatrician Society should have followed these words: "Freedom, equality, brotherhood."
1919 year
After the departure of prof. Troitsky from Kharkiv in 1919 the department was headed by Professor Yakov Arkavin. Ya. Arkavin founded places for infants at the hospital. The section of physiology and pathology of infants is introduced into the curriculum. The pedagogical process becomes more specific and practical.
Prof. Arkavin significantly improved the educational and methodical work. The main requirement in the educational work was to teach students about methods of examining the child by working independently at the patient's bedside. The study of literature, listening to lectures, clinical analysis of patients were the basis for the formation of clinical thinking of students. Mandatory attendance of pathological and anatomical autopsies was introduced for students. Students were taught research skills by participating in conferences, working in groups .
1929 year
In 1929, after the death of Professor J. Arkavin, Professor Mykola Frishman was elected as a head of the department.
M. Frischman expanded the base of the children's clinic by completing the 3rd floor, verandas, opened a biochemical laboratory; expanded research on rheumatism, tuberculosis in children. In 1929 he published a unique book "Epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis in children", due to he was awarded the degree - Doctor of Medicine; 2 manuals - "Introduction to the pediatriian clinic " and "Guide to diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in pediatrics."

The method of independent patients curation, mastering the method of examination of patients, listening to lectures, clinical analysis of patients were introduced into the teaching of students, which were necessary for the formation of clinical thinking of students. During the work of prof. M. Frishman was began the organization of the pediatric faculty at the Kharkiv Medical Institute, in 1930 3 faculties were formed: treatment and prevention, maternity and childhood health, sanitation. The teaching staff grew in 1930 to 10 people. Since 1934, the Faculty of Maternity and Childhood has changed its name to pediatric. Under the supervision of M. Frischman 1 doctoral and 10 candidate dissertations were completed. He is the author of 2 textbooks: "Introduction to the Clinic of Pediatrics" and "Guide to Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques in Pediatrics".
In 1938, the only Department of Pediatrics was divided into the Department of Pediatrics of the Faculty of Pediatrics (The Head is Prof. M. Frischman) and the Department of Pediatrics of Medical and Sanitary and Hygienic Faculties (The Head is Prof. V. Belousov).

The Second World War
During the Second World War in 1941, the department was evacuated in Chkalov (Orenburg) on the basis of the children's hospital Kobzeva № 16. At this time the department was reunited and headed by Professor M. Frischman. On April 14, 1944, Professor M. Frishman died after a serious illness at the age of 55 in Chkalov.
In 1944, after the re-evacuation to Kharkiv, the Department of Pediatrics of the Pediatric Faculty was headed by Professor V. Belousov. In the same year, the work of the Department of Pediatrics of the Medical Faculty was resumed, headed by Professor G.I.Tets.

Since 1944, the teaching process of pediatrics at the Kharkiv Medical Institute was conducted at two departments: pediatric and medical faculties. The course of children's diseases at the Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty, which was held at the Department of Pediatrics of the Pediatric Faculty, was also resumed.
The Postwar years
In the postwar years there was a transition to a three-tier system of training of pediatricians: propaedeutics, faculty and hospital pediatrics, as well as 6-year training at the Medical Institute. In 1946, the Department of Hospital Pediatrics was separated to the Department of Pediatrics of the Faculty of Pediatrics, which was located on the basis of the Research Institute of Maternal and Child Health, and since 1956 - on the basis of 24 children's city hospital. Its staff included: the head of the department, Professor S. Shaferstein and two employees of the clinic Institute of Child and Adolescent Health Protection of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. In 1951, the Department of Hospital Pediatrics was organized as an independent, and in 1953 it was transferred under the leadership of Professor V. Belousov.
In 1952, at the Department of Hospital Pediatrics of the Faculty of Pediatrics, the Department of Propaedeutics of Pediatrics was organized, the basis of which was the 24 Children's City Hospital, and since 1953 - 7 Children's City Hospitals. At this time, the department was headed by Honored Scientist Professor Samuel Schaferstein. Under the guidance of Professor S.Ya. Schaferstein were completed 11 PhD theses, published a monograph "Bacillary dysentery in children." The Department of Hospital Pediatrics became independent again in 1957 and was located on the basis of the children's department of the Kharkiv regional hospital (the first children's university clinic), headed by Professor V. Belousov. The staff of the department were: docent L. Kulik, assistants O. Hnatyuk, V. Kolomensky, V. Chekanov, G. Sukacheva, O. Shcherbina, K. Mertsalova, O. Keibalo, O. Prikhodko, N. Korenev.
1958 year
In September 1958, after the retirement of S. Shaferstein, the department was headed by Doctor of Medicine, Professor Anna Dobrogaeva. At the same time, this department taught children's diseases to students of the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene, which in 1960 was transferred to the Department of Pediatrics of the Faculty of Medicine. At this time, the Department of Propaedeutics was transferred to the Faculty of Pediatrics, the educational base of which became, opened in Kharkov, City Children's Hospital G35 (Muranova Street, 5).
1960 year
In 1960, the teaching of pediatrics at KhMI was held at the Faculty of Pediatrics, the Department of Propaedeutics and Faculty Pediatrics (Head of the Department Professor G. Dobrogaeva), Hospital Pediatrics (Head of the Department Professor V. Belousov), Pediatric and Medical Diseases (Head of the Department Professor G. Tetz). The development of each of them at certain stages was associated with the name of Professor V. Belousov.
Vladimir Belousov - Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the USSR, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. V. Belousov in 1937 defended his doctoral dissertation on "Materials on the protein diet of healthy and sick schoolchildren aged 8-11." In his activity V. Belousov continued the traditions of the founder of the first department of pediatrics M. Ponomarev and prof. I. Troitsky on the development of clinical pediatrics and the creation of conditions for the formation of clinical thinking in students. Prof. V. Belousov was an excellent methodologist and teacher, paid great attention to improve the methods of teaching children's diseases in high school. In pedagogical activity he was always an innovator, looking for new methodological ways and was not afraid of temporary difficulties.

Among the works of Vladimir Alexandrovich more than 60 publications, including 3 monographs and 2 textbooks: "Technical means of general diagnosis", "Diagnostic tools for kidney disease", "The criteria of recovery". Textbooks "Children's Diseases" (1963, 1971), written for medical universities and medical schools, played an important role in improving the quality of students' education. Methodical manuals on clinical analysis of patients, writing a medical history, epicrisis, methods of teaching students in the clinic are useful manuals for students and teachers to date. During the period of V. Belousov's activity the subordination on pediatrics was introduced at the pediatric faculty. Under the guidance of V. Belousov 7 doctoral and 35 candidate dissertations were completed. His students are doctors of medical sciences, who headed the departments of medical institutes in Vinnytsia (A.Hnatyuk), in Lviv (N. Frishman), in Ternopil (I. Smeyan), in the Kharkiv Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (N. Dmitrov). Some candidates of sciences who defended their dissertations under his supervision, later, becoming doctors of sciences, also headed the departments: V. Kolomensky in Kharkov, S. Ostropolets in Donetsk, N. Korenev - director of the Institute of Child and Adolescent Health Protection of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

In 1953, the Department of Hospital Pediatrics was presented with the best clinical base at that time - the children's department of the regional clinical hospital, which operated clinical and biochemical laboratories and office of functional diagnostics.

The activity of prof. V. Belousov as chairman of the regional society of pediatricians was productive, V. Belousov headed it for 17 years (1954-1971). The work of the Society of Pediatricians was carried out in three directions: scientific development of topical issues of pediatrics, improvement of pediatricians, organizational, methodological and advisory assistance to the bodies of practical health care. V. Belousov public activity included also his work as a member of the Academic Medical Council of the Ministry of Health of the USSR, a member of the editorial board of the journal Pediatrics, a member of the editorial board of the journal Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, a member of the All-Union and Republican Societies of Pediatricians. His scientific activity was highly appreciated by his election as a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1959) and the award of the honorary title of Honored Scientist of the USSR.

Due to the transition of Professor V. Belousov to the position of consultant of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics, it was headed by Professor G. Dobrogaeva (1965-1972), and the head of the Department of Propaedeutics of Faculty Pediatrics was Professor V.Prykhodko (1965-1973).

Dobrogaeva trained 10 candidates of medical sciences and 11 clinical residents. About 50 scientific papers were published. In 1961, Professor G. Dobrogaeva was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.

1965 years
Valentyna Prykhodko, a graduate of the Kharkiv Medical Institute, Faculty of Pediatrics, graduated in 1953, was elected head of the Department of Propaedeutics and Faculty of Pediatrics in 1965. Her medical training during 1953-1965 took place in the clinic of the Department of Pediatrics. The path of a clinical resident, assistant professor, associate professor of the department was passed here, the candidate's dissertation "State of higher nervous activity in children with rheumatism" (1956) and the doctoral dissertation "Clinic of chronic decompensated tonsillitis and its difference from rheumatism in children", defended in 1966 .
A significant contribution to the improvement of educational and methodical work, development of science, training, organization and enrichment of medical-diagnostic and consulting work together with the bodies of practical health care was made during the leadership of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics of prof. V. Prikhodko. In 70-80 years the staff of the department was engaged in the development of topical issues of pediatric cardiology, focusing on primary hypertension (N. Korenev, S. Lupaltsova, O. Chugaenko, L. Parkhomenko). However, in response to requests from practical health care, in connection with the growth of severe toxic forms of pneumonia in young children, which led to an increase in infant mortality. The staff of the department has developed research of pneumonia in young children from the standpoint of studying the neurohumoral mechanisms of regulation of body functions. In the works of prof. V. Prikhodko, Assoc. Yu. Odintsya, V. Fyoklina, O. Chugaenko, Yu. Shovkoplias, O. Bezkorovaina, T. Popovska, N. Karpenko studied the nature of disorders of the cardiovascular system, the state microcirculation, excretion of catecholamines, aldosterone in the urine, the state of the kinin system, disorders of the hemocoagulation system, the immune and nervous systems, etc.
The results of the research were used in substantiate the pathogenetic therapy of children with toxic forms of pneumonia in critical conditions using infusions, hemocorrectors, heparin, antiproteases, immunosuppressants and others. The result of the introduction of these methods of treatment was to increase the effectiveness of treatment of children with pneumonia and reduce infant mortality in the city of Kharkiv and districts of the region. The staff of the department issued guidelines "Pathogenetic therapy of young children with severe pneumonia" (1982, 1991) at the national level. Materials on the treatment of children with severe pneumonia with great attention were received by delegates to the VI Congress of Pediatricians of the USSR (1977). In 1987, the results of scientific research on this problem was presented at the USSR Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy. Staff of the department was awarded by the medal of Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy.

The doctoral dissertations of Yu. Odints "Clinical and pathogenetic characteristics of hemodynamic disorders and their therapy in emergencies caused by acute bronchopulmonary diseases" (1984), V. Fyoklina "Clinico" are devoted to the issue of treatment of children with acute pneumonia. Pathogenetic substantiation of therapy of severe forms of acute bronchopulmonary diseases in young children "(1992) and candidate dissertations of Yu. Shovkoplias (1978), O. Bezkorovaina (1979), T. Popovska (1983) g.), O. Nikolaeva (1989).

After reducing the incidence and mortality of children from pneumonia, the staff of the department again expanded research in the field of pediatric cardiology. In 1981, Associate Professor G. Sukacheva completed her research by defending her doctoral dissertation on the diagnosis of non-rheumatic myocarditis in children. Candidate's dissertations of A. Sudakov and N. Steblin, a condition of lipid peroxidation – A. Muzartaeva, an estimation of a condition of the central hemodynamics and intracardiac kinetics - Samara Abu Yousef are devoted to questions of immunology of nonreumatic myocarditis. Further research of the staff of the department was devoted to the study of non-rheumatic heart disease in children at different ages, starting from infancy. These are candidate dissertations of N. Buzhynska, G. Senatorova, M. Nekrasenko, M. Potter (Morozova), Y. Lysikova.
One of the important and little-studied areas of pediatrics is arrhythmology. In the 90s, the staff of the department studied the variants of arrhythmias in children and the possible causes of their occurrence. Candidate's dissertations of O. Strashko, M. Khaina are devoted to this. For the first time in Ukraine, G. Senatorova introduced the method of transesophageal electrophysiological examination in children, which allowed to decide the choice of treatment methods of children with cardiac arrhythmias. The mechanisms of extrasystole in children have also been studied and complexes of their pathogenetic therapy have been developed (M. Uryvaieva, 2002).

Little-studied issues of pediatric cardiology were covered in the dissertations of O. Riga (2001), which was devoted to clinical and morphological studies in cardiomyopathy in children and O. Omelchenko (1998), which was devoted to the diagnostic value of excess effusion at the pericardium during acute bronchopulmonary diseases in children.

In the work of T.Chaichenko (2001) are determined the peculiarities of the functional state of the cardiorespiratory system in the period of exacerbation of bronchial asthma in children, which is a continuation of systemic research in clinical medicine (supervisor V. Foklin).

The education of foreign students at the Department of Hospital Pediatrics began in the 1995-1996 academic year, and in the 2000-2001 academic year, the department introduced teaching in English.
V. Prykhodko successfully combined all these activities with great public work. In 1967-73 V. Prykhodko headed the Knowledge Society of the KhMI, she was elected as a member of the Presidium of the Kharkiv Regional Organization and as a member of the Audit Commission of the Ukrainian Republican Organization of the Knowledge Society (1982). During 20 years (1967-1987) V. Prikhodko worked as a member of the commission on work among women of All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions. From 1971 to 2010 she was heading the Kharkiv Society (Association) of Pediatricians, which from 2010 to the present is heading by Professor G. Senatorova, repeatedly elected a member of the All-Union and Ukrainian Republican Society of Pediatricians. In 1988, Valentina Prykhodko was elected a member of the All-Union Board of the Mercy and Health Foundation, which was first organized in our country in February 1989. She was elected as the President of the Kharkiv Regional Foundation "Mercy and Health". V. Prykhodko has awards: the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1971), the medal "For Valiant Labor" (1970). In 1991 she was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine", in 1993 she was elected as an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine.
